There is no easy fix for Coastside traffic. Debbie's approach is practical: make the roads we have work better and give people more ways to get around without getting in a car.
Traffic is one of the Coastside's biggest problems. Debbie knows it firsthand after commuting Highway 92 and Highway 1 for more than 30 years.
No single road project will solve it. Highway 1 and Highway 92 have real physical and environmental constraints. The answer is to work on several fronts at once: improve highway safety and traffic flow, expand trails and bike routes, strengthen bus service, and reduce the number of local trips that require a car.
Debbie will keep working with Caltrans on Highway 1, complete missing trail and bike connections, and make it easier to walk or bike between neighborhoods, schools, downtown, beaches and shopping areas.
She also wants better bus service along the Coastside, including improved stops and smaller, more flexible service connecting neighborhoods, senior housing, downtown and commercial areas.
Debbie is exploring park-and-play ideas that would let residents and visitors leave a car and continue by shuttle, bike or trail instead of adding another vehicle to the most congested parts of town.
She was also an early supporter of exploring the Skyline Gondola as a possible way to connect the Coastside with the Peninsula without putting more cars on Highway 92.
There is no silver bullet. The goal is steady progress: make the roads work better, give people more choices, and reduce the number of trips that have to be made by car.
